New Year, New Focus

12.31.2014 by oul_admin // Leave a Comment

“The indispensable first step to getting things you want out of this life is this:
 decide what you want.”

Ben Stein

2015 is right around the corner & I’m checking my focus before the new year begins!

The best is yet to come!

2014 brought some major life changes for me.  I spent a portion of the year in hospitals, lost my mother, planned a large wedding from out of state, got married, moved, started a new job, and bought a house.   After researching New Year’s resolutions and trying to narrow my ever-growing list of goals, I’ve decided to adjust my focus.

These are five areas I’ve decided to focus on this year:

1. Love & serve God.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and all his righteousness: and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33

I need to dig deeper & strengthen my relationship with God.  The Lord has been speaking to me about His plans for my life, and I need to plug-in deeper to understand what He wants me to do.  I feel led to be fearless starting this year.

I’m going to start the year off by reading Living Courageously by Joyce Meyer.  Her books are usually a quick read, but very informative.  Joyce experienced a lot of suffering in her early years in abuse & neglect.  She learned to change her mindset and focus on God.  Now she helps others do the same.

2. Honor my husband.
“With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:2-3

Married life has been anything but easy.  I love my husband a lot, but that hasn’t made life easier. Since the wedding in July, the hubby and I have been busy.  We’ve had a lot on our plates, and since things are slowing down (hopefully), I think we can make a better effort on focusing on our marriage.  God calls wives to honor their husbands, and husbands to love their wives.   I’m going to ensure that I honor him in our everyday activities even when it gets tough.

3. Take care of my body.
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” 1 Corinthians 6:19

Yes, my body is not my own.  How would you treat your body if you thought of it as a temple with the Holy Spirit dwelling inside?  Throughout the business of the year, I’ve neglected my body.  My eating habits have been all over the place and I’ve worn myself  down until I was sick trying to do everything (currently catching a cold now, unfortunately).  I want to make a more conscious effort in deciding what I eat and drink, how I dress, how I take care of my hair and skin, and how I treat my body overall.  The Lord does not want us to be vain, but we are called to take care of the body we were given.  I’m going listen to my body and when I feel worn out or stressed, I will rest.

4. Be a good steward.
“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Galatians 6:7

I will focus on being more productive with my time, money, things, and energy.  I will continue to work hard to excel at work and in all of my educational endeavors.   My mother always preached the importance of having good organization.  I’m going to start  by re-organizing as I move into my new home and ensuring I take advantage of my new planner and calendars upfront.

5. Give back.
“I have shewed you these things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said it, It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20: 35

I want to give back more this year.  Over the last half of 2014, I focused on helping family members with medical issues.  Other than God, work and school, I didn’t focus on much else.  I’ve seen so much love poured out to me this year that I want to pour back into the lives of others.

In addition to being there for my family,  I want to focus on helping those outside of my family & friends again.  I’m going to start with the things I’m passionate about like become a special advocate for children in foster care,  volunteering at the hospital, and blogging.

My Favorite Natural Products

12.05.2014 by oul_admin // Leave a Comment

I’ve been trying to be more natural in what I consume and also in the products I put on my skin and hair.  These are my current favorites that I always find myself restocking.
From right to left.

Tazo Zen Green Tea.  The spearmint and lemongrass in this tea makes the flavor pop! I don’t even need to add tea or sugar.  The benefits of green tea are endless!

Purity Facial Cleanser. Very gentle and cleans my face very well.

Jane Carter Solution Nourish & Shine. This is my alternative to grease.  When I wear braids or a put my hair in a bun this is my go-to product.

Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner.  This product saved my hair when I lived in dry Colorado.  It is the best detangling product I’ve used and it leaves my hair soft and moisturized.

Yes to Cucumbers Facial Wipes.  Gently removes all dirt, oil, and makeup easily off my face and makes my skin feel so soft.

Ole Henriksen Three Little Wonders.  The only natural product I’ve found to address my hyper-pigmentation.  I only wish I didn’t have to add sunscreen to the regimen during the day.

Bite Beauty Mulberry Luminous Creme Lipstick.  The most moisturizing lipstick I’ve ever tried.  The ingredients in the product are even safe enough to eat.

The Body Shop SpaWisdom Polynesia Miracle Monoi Oil.  This is the best smelling product of the bunch and the coconut oil in this mixture does wonders for my hair.

I’d love to hear your favorite products below!

7 Things I’m Thankful For

11.28.2014 by oul_admin // Leave a Comment

1. God.  Without him, I am nothing.

2.  Family.  I love my big family, craziness and all.  My family keeps me grounded and has taught me the power of unconditional love and resiliency.  The new members of my family I’ve gained through marriage have welcomed me whole-heartedly into their lives.

3. Friends.  My close friends have become more like family and we’ve grown even closer this year.

4.  Food.  I truly enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner this year.  My husband even made delicious salmon for me, the non-meat eater.  This year I’ve also seen love poured out to me so many times through food.  At the times when life was especially rough, those meals were a source of hope and strength for each day.

5.  Forgiveness.  I’d be a liar if I said that forgiveness has been easy for me this year.  There have been a few people that I’ve found it hard to forgive, but I have made the choice to forgive even if my pride tells me not to.

6.  A roof over my head.  A few months ago, my husband and I moved back to my hometown to be closer to my family to help out.  We’ve been staying with my dad until we find a home.  It has not been easy moving from having our own places to living in one bedroom, but we’ve learned to be more content no matter where we are.  But we may have found the perfect place and may be homeowners soon!

7. Trials.  Despite all that I’ve been through lately, I still have joy.  Losing my mother this year, my best friend and my biggest supporter, rocked my world.  Yet, my mother taught me to endure no matter the situation.  I’ll end with this scripture.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that testing of your faith develops perseverance.”  James 1:2-3
