Fasting and Putting Your Priorities in Order

08.21.2015 by oul_admin // Leave a Comment

Mark 9: 29- And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

I recently completed a fast, and God revealed a lot to me during this period.  Yet, he didn’t reveal what I was looking for- a way out of my problems.  He has provided what I needed for each situation to enable me to work through and overcome them with Him.

I’ve been fasting as long as I can remember being a Christian.  My parents typically did the Daniel Fast when I grew up (fruits, vegetables, nuts, nothing processed), and I remember asking them if I could join.  My desire for the Lord was always strong as a child.  I remember refraining from TV and removing the meat from a pizza at my friend’s birthday party.  As I matured as a Christian, I still fasted, but I found it harder to fast with the right heart and mindset.

When I lived in South Korea, I was in a Bible Study group among peers and I led a lesson on fasting.  During the research, I remembered what I had forgotten over the years, fasting is about opening yourself up to God’s will, not getting God to do whatever you want.  I remember fasting when my mother was in the hospital.  When I first started it was for her healing, but overtime God opened my heart to be receptive to his will.

These are the things that I have learned over the years from reading the Bible and fasting:

1.  Fasting is not about losing weight or vain personal gain.  As the title states, it’s not a diet, but refraining from food/something to cause you to rely more on and focus on God.

Matthew 5:6 Blessed [are] they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled.

2.  Fasting requires commitment.  While fasting, you must set a side time to pray, read the Bible, and spend time with God.  God wants us to seek after him.

Matthew 6: 31-33 So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?”  For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

3.  When fasting, you should not complain or tell everyone about your fast/business.  This is just between you and God, unless you’re fasting with someone else.

Matthew 6: 16-18 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast.  Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.  But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

4.  Do not give up.  My hardest fasts have been when I gave up carbs.  One time in college, I did stop the fast.  Yet, I’ve learned that if I keep pushing the Lord will sustain me.  Jesus fasted for 40 days.  Many other people fasted in the Bible, and it’s part of the life of many many Christians today.

Luke 4: 2 Being forty days tempted of the devil.  And in those days he did eat nothing; and when they were ended, he afterward.

I encourage you to fast and grow closer to God.   If you’d like another post on the specific types fasts or the breakthroughs that I’ve experienced fasting, please let me know.

Track & Field Update

 Triple Jumpers!
(taken a year ago)

This week has been full of nothing but learning a ton of lessons. Last weekend I had a Track Meet and realized that I needed to protect my “me time” before competition. I didn’t jump as well as I wanted to but I also wasn’t mentally ready. My Track buddy, who I love no doubt, is the type of competitor that likes to converse before the meet to get her nerves down. I’m the type to enjoy some quiet and alone time. So my track buddy and I tried to find a happy median but I still couldn’t get into a competitive mindset until before my last jump when my coach said to act like I was at the Olympics in 4th place on my last jump. Then I actually put out a decent jump.

This weekend went a lot better. Still didn’t jump as far as I wanted to but I jumped much farther than last week. Today was the best Track meet I’ve had in two years spiritually and mentally. (I know that’s a long time to be out of it.) Why? Because when the triple jump was over I got to talk everything through with my coach and two of his old triple jump buddies (40 years old plus I’m sure). My coach was around 54-56ft triple jumper and one of his friends that was competing today was a 55ft jumper (He didn’t jump that today because of his age). During this conversation I was told a few things…

1. Patience is a virtue

2. Not many can do what we do (Triple Jump)

3. This is Fun!

4. We’re here to glorify God and bless others through the talent He’s given us

We discussed other enlightening things but these were the highlights. They were very simple statements that I’ve heard so many times but I think this was the first time my heart was open enough to receive all of them completely. Statements like the first have always been easy to hear and understand but hard to internalize and live. I hope to start internalizing and living out every positive piece of advice that aids me in my walk with God.

New Year, New Focus

12.31.2014 by oul_admin // Leave a Comment

“The indispensable first step to getting things you want out of this life is this:
 decide what you want.”

Ben Stein

2015 is right around the corner & I’m checking my focus before the new year begins!

The best is yet to come!

2014 brought some major life changes for me.  I spent a portion of the year in hospitals, lost my mother, planned a large wedding from out of state, got married, moved, started a new job, and bought a house.   After researching New Year’s resolutions and trying to narrow my ever-growing list of goals, I’ve decided to adjust my focus.

These are five areas I’ve decided to focus on this year:

1. Love & serve God.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and all his righteousness: and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33

I need to dig deeper & strengthen my relationship with God.  The Lord has been speaking to me about His plans for my life, and I need to plug-in deeper to understand what He wants me to do.  I feel led to be fearless starting this year.

I’m going to start the year off by reading Living Courageously by Joyce Meyer.  Her books are usually a quick read, but very informative.  Joyce experienced a lot of suffering in her early years in abuse & neglect.  She learned to change her mindset and focus on God.  Now she helps others do the same.

2. Honor my husband.
“With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:2-3

Married life has been anything but easy.  I love my husband a lot, but that hasn’t made life easier. Since the wedding in July, the hubby and I have been busy.  We’ve had a lot on our plates, and since things are slowing down (hopefully), I think we can make a better effort on focusing on our marriage.  God calls wives to honor their husbands, and husbands to love their wives.   I’m going to ensure that I honor him in our everyday activities even when it gets tough.

3. Take care of my body.
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” 1 Corinthians 6:19

Yes, my body is not my own.  How would you treat your body if you thought of it as a temple with the Holy Spirit dwelling inside?  Throughout the business of the year, I’ve neglected my body.  My eating habits have been all over the place and I’ve worn myself  down until I was sick trying to do everything (currently catching a cold now, unfortunately).  I want to make a more conscious effort in deciding what I eat and drink, how I dress, how I take care of my hair and skin, and how I treat my body overall.  The Lord does not want us to be vain, but we are called to take care of the body we were given.  I’m going listen to my body and when I feel worn out or stressed, I will rest.

4. Be a good steward.
“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Galatians 6:7

I will focus on being more productive with my time, money, things, and energy.  I will continue to work hard to excel at work and in all of my educational endeavors.   My mother always preached the importance of having good organization.  I’m going to start  by re-organizing as I move into my new home and ensuring I take advantage of my new planner and calendars upfront.

5. Give back.
“I have shewed you these things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said it, It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20: 35

I want to give back more this year.  Over the last half of 2014, I focused on helping family members with medical issues.  Other than God, work and school, I didn’t focus on much else.  I’ve seen so much love poured out to me this year that I want to pour back into the lives of others.

In addition to being there for my family,  I want to focus on helping those outside of my family & friends again.  I’m going to start with the things I’m passionate about like become a special advocate for children in foster care,  volunteering at the hospital, and blogging.
